prior spanish invasion in 1524, population of guatemala exclusively maya. spanish conquest created system of wealthy european landowners overseeing labor force composed of slaves , bonded laborers. however, community lands of indigenous population remained in control until late 19th century. @ point, rising global demand coffee made export significant source of income government. result, state supported coffee growers passing legislation took land away indian population, relaxing labor laws bonded labor used on plantations.


the us-based united fruit company (ufc) 1 of many foreign companies acquired large tracts of both state land , indigenous land. manuel estrada cabrera, president of guatemala 1898 1920, permitted limited unionization in rural guatemala, made further concessions ufc. in 1922, communist party of guatemala created, , became significant influence among urban laborers; however, had little reach among rural , indian populations. in 1929, great depression led collapse of economy , rise in unemployment, leading unrest among workers , laborers. fearing possibility of revolution, landed elite lent support jorge ubico y castañeda, had built reputation ruthlessness , efficiency provincial governor. ubico won election followed in 1931, in candidate.
