the kings started 2017 super rugby season on losing note, 26–39 defeat jaguares in port elizabeth. secured first away win 4 years in next match, winning 37–23 against sunwolves in singapore, followed 3 consecutive defeats on home soil, against stormers, sharks , lions respectively. lost force , reds in opening 2 matches of australian tour, bounced beating waratahs 26–24 in sydney. secured highest victory margin in next match, winning 44–3 against rebels in port elizabeth, before securing first ever victory on south african opposition, beating sharks 35–32. after losing brumbies , lions in next 2 matches, secured 31–30 away wins jaguares , bulls in next two, before ending campaign 20–21 defeat cheetahs in bloemfontein. record of 6 wins , 9 losses saw them finish bottom of africa 2 conference, fifth in south african group – ahead of local rivals bulls , cheetahs – , 11th overall. lionel cronjé topped scoring charts, finishing on 136 points season, fourth-highest in competition, while winger makazole mapimpi scored 11 tries, new seasonal , all-time record kings , joint-third highest in competition.
