croatia has 2 main wine regions: continental (kontinetalna) , coastal (primorska), includes islands. each of main regions divided sub-regions, divided yet further smaller vinogorje, (literally wine hills). altogether, there more 300 geographically-defined wine-producing areas in croatia.

the inland wine region, stretching north-west south-east along drava , sava rivers, has typical continental climate cold winters , hot summers. production concentrated in white wine varieties. best-known area within region slavonia, , planted grape graševina, yields light, crisp, refreshing, mildly aromatic wines.

the coastal wine region runs istria in north dalmatia south. mediterranean climate, long, hot dry summers , mild, short, wet winters particularly suited wine production. in istria , north coast, focus on fruity, dry white wines wide range of grape varieties, malvazija, bold, dry reds including teran. further south, in dalmatia, islands , hillsides have infinite variety of microclimates resulting in wine-growing area terroir crucially important factor. wide range of indigenous grape varietals grown here, best known being plavac mali, child of zinfandel , dobričić.
