the southern tier hilly without being mountainous (with exception of catskill mountains). can range low rolling hills more steep , rugged cliffs , valleys. both delaware , susquehanna rivers flow through southern tier in upper reaches, allegheny river in western southern tier.


the southern tier makes northernmost portion of appalachia , lies on allegheny plateau. defined on western boundary chautauqua ridge in chautauqua county, , including ridge , extending eastward across northern bounds of region, continental divide between great lakes , mississippi river watersheds exists. eastern continental divide runs directly through region, in steuben county.
