on november 6, 2012, bob ferguson defeated fellow king county councilmember reagan dunn elected 18th attorney general of washington state. ferguson won margin of more 200,000 votes, receiving 53.48% of vote dunn’s 46.52%.


ferguson won despite unprecedented amount being spent out-of-state group in washington state attorney general s race. during course of campaign, ferguson visited 39 washington state counties.


arlene s flowers lawsuit

in april 2013 ferguson filed consumer protection lawsuit against barronelle stutzman , richland, washington floral shop arlene s flowers in response complaint robert ingersoll , fiance curt freed.


ferguson claimed business violated washington s consumer protection law after stutzman refused provide flowers couple s same sex wedding. attorney general s office sent letter stutzman informing in violation of washington state s consumer protection act. letter ferguson called penalty of $2,000 dollars , celebrate same sex unions. stutzman sent reply against religious beliefs so. attorney general s office followed phone call stutzman, giving opportunity comply law, head off legal action, , avoid paying fees or costs. stutzman responded letter lawyer. move criticized stutzman s lawyer, stated ferguson did not have statutory authority file lawsuit , uncertain whether or not clear case of discrimination . engaged couple’s attorneys @ american civil liberties union sued florist damages.


the couple had been previous clients of stutzman 9 years until had requested services wedding, refused based upon religious view on same sex marriage. stutzman filed counter-suit, stating ferguson s lawsuit attempt force violate religious beliefs. stutzman , attorneys @ alliance defending freedom requested lawsuit dismissed, alleged suit didn t show couple had suffered financial injury business or property. judge sal mendoza jr. ruled lawsuit continue, time , travel spent traveling arlene s flowers , finding florist did count financial injury.


on february 18, 2015, benton county superior court judge alexander ekstrom ruled had violated state s anti-discrimination law. on february 19, 2015, stutzman stated appeal ruling. on march 27, 2015, judge ekstrom ordered stutzman pay $1,000 fine, plus $1 court costs , fees.


on november 15, 2016, ferguson argued @ washington supreme court hearing, held before audience in bellevue college’s auditorium. on february 16, 2017, washington supreme court ruled unanimously against florist. in court’s opinion, justice sheryl gordon mccloud wrote neither u.s. constitution’s free exercise clause nor free speech clause gave florist right refuse participate in wedding.


comcast lawsuit

on august 1, 2016, ferguson announced state of washington sue telecommunications company comcast on deceptive consumer practices. $100 million consumer protection lawsuit filed on 1.8 million individual violations of state s consumer protection act.


re-election

in 2016, republicans did not have single candidate run against ferguson, faced joshua trumbull, libertarian no political experience. ferguson spent little of money had raised campaign, , re-elected, 69% 31%. garnered votes of state candidate , carried 37 of state s 39 counties.


executive order 13769


president donald trump signed executive order 13769 on january 27, 2017, banned entry united states ninety days non-citizens , refugees 7 middle eastern countries. on january 30, ferguson , governor jay inslee announced state file legal challenge against president trump, relevant administrative secretaries, overturn order, arguing case of religious discrimination.


ferguson filed suit within 72 hours, statements of support washington-based companies, including amazon , microsoft. in united states district court western district of washington on february 3, 2017, u.s. district judge james l. robart ruled in ferguson s favor temporary restraining order on enforcement of travel ban nationwide.
