1957–1961: First bands Ringo Starr

soon after trafford piqued starkey s interest in skiffle, 2 began rehearsing songs in manufacturing plant s cellar during lunch breaks. trafford recalled: played guitar, , [ritchie] made noise on box ... sometimes, slapped biscuit tin keys, or banged on backs of chairs. pair joined starkey s neighbour , co-worker, guitarist eddie miles, forming eddie miles band, later renamed eddie clayton , clayton squares after liverpool landmark. band performed popular skiffle songs such rock island line , walking cane , starkey raking thimble across washboard, creating primitive, driving rhythms. starkey enjoyed dancing parents had years earlier, , , trafford briefly took dance lessons @ 2 schools. though lessons short-lived, provided starkey , trafford introduction allowed them dance competently while enjoying nights out on town.

on christmas day 1957, graves gave starkey second-hand drum kit consisting of snare drum, bass drum , makeshift cymbal fashioned rubbish bin lid. although basic , crude, kit facilitated progression musician while increasing commercial potential of eddie clayton band, went on book prestigious local gigs before skiffle craze faded in 1958 american rock , roll became popular in uk.

in november 1959, starkey joined al caldwell s texans, skiffle group looking proper drum kit group transition 1 of liverpool s best-known skiffle acts full-fledged rock , roll band. had begun playing local clubs raging texans, jet storm , raging texans before settling on rory storm , hurricanes before recruiting starkey. time adopted stage name ringo starr; derived rings wore , because implied country , western influence. drum solos billed starr time.
