the idea of restoring primitive form of christianity grew in popularity in u.s. after american revolution. desire restore purer form of christianity without elaborate hierarchy contributed development of many groups during second great awakening, including mormons, baptists , shakers. several factors made restoration sentiment particularly appealing during time period:



to immigrants in 19th century, land in united states seemed pristine, edenic , undefiled – perfect place recover pure, uncorrupted , original christianity – , tradition-bound european churches seemed out of place in new setting.
