the notion of march music began borrowed ottoman empire in 16th century. ottomans believed have introduced first military bands in thirteenth century, called mehter or janissary bands. music characterized shrill sound combining bass drums, horns (boru), bells, triangle , cymbals (zil) , several other traditional instruments. sound associated mehterân exercised influence on european classical music, such composers joseph haydn, wolfgang amadeus mozart, , ludwig van beethoven writing compositions inspired or designed imitate ottoman music. see also: american march music.
