the slavic ancestors of present-day slovenes settled karst plateau in 7th century ad. in middle ages, village belonged lombard kingdom, frankish kingdom, patriarchate of aquileia, , counts of gorizia acquired in 15th century.


the village first mentioned in 1179 dobradan. misspelling of slovene name doberdob. rest of county of gorizia, doberdob came under habsburg rule in 1500, , remained part of habsburg monarchy until 1918, when occupied , annexed italy.


the whole area scene of fierce fighting between austro-hungarian , italian armies during world war i. village destroyed during battles of isonzo. more fifth of population lost lives consequence of war. between 1922 , 1943, doberdob subjected policy of violent fascist italianization. during period, village part of province of trieste.


during world war ii, communist-lead liberation front of slovenian people organized anti-fascist resistance in area starting late 1942. many locals fought , died in yugoslav partisan units. village liberated yugoslav people s army on 1 may 1945. yugoslavs withdrew in june of same year, , replaced anglo-american military administration. in september 1947, village reincorporated italy, , included in province of gorizia.


between mid 1950s , late 1980s, doberdob 1 of electoral strongholds of italian communist party, although significant proportion of electorate supported slovene union, democratic party of slovenes in italy. since 1990s, vast majority of population has supported 1 of left-wing political parties.
