the nflpa, led president gene upshaw , nfl commissioner roger goodell, worked player conduct in form of suspensions off field conduct in light of more fifty arrests local law enforcement since start of 2006 season. hardest hit came on april 10 when adam pacman jones of tennessee titans suspended entire season 5 arrests, blatant while in las vegas nba all-star weekend in february accused of causing riot/shooting in strip club. same day, chris henry of cincinnati bengals suspended first 8 games of season run-ins legal system. other big name has been caught in web of controversy falcons quarterback michael vick. vick charged on july 24, 2007 dogfighting , animal abuse, , suspended following guilty plea in case, on sentenced 23 months in prison (retroactive november) , 3 years probation on december 10.


death of marquise hill

on evening of may 27, 2007, marquise hill, defensive end new england patriots , friend fell off jet ski in lake pontchartrain, north of new orleans. 2 wearing neither personal flotation nor tracking devices. friend rescued , sent tulane medical center, hill did not survive; body found next day. patriots honored hill, first patriots player die while still member of team, wearing black circular decals on helmets hill s number, 91.


death of sean taylor

fourth-year player sean taylor, defensive redskins, shot in home near miami, florida on november 26. armed machete, taylor confronted robbers breaking home—the 17-year-old eric rivera, jr., 18-year-old charles wadlow, , 20-year-olds jason mitchell , venjah hunte. rivera fired 2 shots 9 mm gun, 1 missing , other hitting taylor s leg, going right groin left according autopsy obtained associated press. died injuries next day.


for remainder of season, redskins honored him black patch on right shoulder of player uniform jerseys, while 32 teams honored taylor applying decal playing number (21) on left side of helmets. taylor s memory honored in games during week 13 , 3 redskins representatives in pro bowl wore number 21 in honor. in 2013, jury found rivera guilty of second-degree murder , armed burglary. in 2014 rivera received sentence of 57 ⁄2 years in prison; testified else fired gun. jason scott mitchell convicted , sentenced life imprisonment, 3 others still awaiting verdicts.


spygate

during patriots season opening game @ meadowlands against jets, patriots camera staffer ejected patriots sideline , accused of videotaping jets defensive coaches relaying signals. end result team fined $250,000, head coach bill belicheck docked $500,000 (the maximum fine imposed) , stripped of first round selection of 2008 nfl draft. if pats had failed make playoffs, penalty have been second , third round picks. team allowed keep other first-round pick acquired san francisco 49ers during previous year s selection meeting.
