following lennon s murder in december 1980, harrison modified lyrics of song had written starr, years ago , tribute former bandmate. released harrison single in 1981, track, included starr s drum part , overdubbed backing vocals paul , linda mccartney, peaked @ number 2 in charts , number 13 in uk. later year, starr released stop , smell roses, featuring songs produced nilsson, mccartney, harrison, ronnie wood , stephen stills. album s lead single, harrison-composed wrack brain , reached number 38 in charts, failed chart in uk. lennon had offered pair of songs inclusion on album – nobody told me , life begins @ 40 – following death, starr did not feel comfortable recording them. after murder, starr , girlfriend barbara bach flew new york city lennon s widow yoko ono.


following stop , smell roses, starr s recording projects beset problems. after completing old wave in 1982 producer joe walsh, unable find record company willing release album in uk or us. in 1987, abandoned sessions in memphis planned country album, produced chips moman, after moman blocked court injunction issuing recordings. starr nevertheless maintained high public profile through narration on 1984–86 of popular children s series thomas & friends, britt allcroft production based on books reverend w. awdry. single season in 1989, starr portrayed character mr. conductor in programme s american spin-off, shining time station.


in 1985, starr performed son zak part of artists united against apartheid on recording sun city , and, harrison , eric clapton, among special guests on carl perkins tv special blue suede shoes: rockabilly session. in 1987, played drums on harrison s beatles pastiche when fab , appeared in godley & creme s innovative video clip song. same year, starr joined harrison, clapton, jeff lynne , elton john in performance @ london s wembley arena prince s trust charity. in january 1988, attended rock , roll hall of fame ceremony in new york, harrison , ono (the latter representing lennon), accept beatles induction hall of fame.


during october , november 1988, starr , bach attended detox clinic in tucson, arizona, each receiving six-week treatment alcoholism. later commented on longstanding addiction: years ve lost, absolute years … ve no idea happened. lived in blackout. having embraced sobriety, starr focused on re-establishing career making return touring. on 23 july 1989, ringo starr & all-starr band gave first performance audience of ten thousand in dallas, texas. setting pattern continue on following decades, band consisted of starr , assortment of musicians had been successful in own right popular songs @ different times. concerts interchanged starr s singing, including selections of beatles , solo songs, performances of each of other artists well-known material, latter incorporating either starr or musician drummer.
