funeral procession in new york
on 19 february, funeral service held @ home, followed military procession. general joseph e. johnston, confederate officer had commanded resistance sherman s troops in georgia , carolinas, served pallbearer in new york city. bitterly cold day , friend of johnston, fearing general might become ill, asked him put on hat. johnston famously replied: if in [sherman s] place, , standing in mine, not put on hat. johnston did catch serious cold , died 1 month later of pneumonia.
general sherman s body transported st. louis, service conducted on 21 february 1891 @ local catholic church. son, thomas ewing sherman, jesuit priest, presided on father s funeral mass. sherman buried in calvary cemetery in st. louis.
