the third-generation engine uses (enthusiast-dubbed) toyota ct20b turbo, of same design second-generation improved turbine housing , larger compressor wheel. factory bpv installed on applications. intake charge cooled water-to-air top-mounted intercooler similar in shape st185rc wta. 1 can tell difference st205 wta black while st185 wta silver black centre. generation away t-vis , uses normal 4 runner intake same port shape , size na engine (but larger injector holes side feed). air flow meter removed in favor of map sensing system (prior generations used map sensor purpose of factory boost gauge , determining overboost fuel cut). various increases included injector size (540cc), boost (13psi), overboost fuel cut limit (18psi), intake cam lift (8.7mm), throttle body size (60mm), , 10mm increase in exhaust ports. exhaust valve lift retained @ 8.2mm. in late 1997, block casting revised added support around head prevent block cracking problems. ct20b turbo found in generation backwards compatible second generation motors, not first generation. further improvements include factory oil catch can. compression reduced down 8.5:1 power improved 245-255ps(242-251hp) , 304 n·m (224 lb-ft).
fourth generation
the fourth-generation engine uses proprietary ct15b turbocharger. generation used in 1997-2002 st215 caldina gt-t awd wagon. exhaust housing cast cylinder exhaust manifold, rather normal practice of separate turbine housing after cylinder exhaust manifold. due this, ct15 backwards compatible third-generation 3s-gte cylinder head only, not either first or second generation. intake charge cooled air-to-air top-mounted intercooler fed through new side-feed intake manifold. generation utilizes coil-on-plug ignition system , 550cc injectors. boost remains @ 13-14psi, overboost fuel cut increased 21psi. compression increased 9:1 , produces 260ps (256 hp) , 324n·m (239 lb-ft).
fifth generation
the fifth-generation engine uses same turbo fourth generation model. generation used in 2002-2007 st246 caldina gt-four awd wagon. there minor differences engine compared previous version , due limited markets receiving st246, little known , few aware of engine. differences include longer of injectors closer intake ports. intake manifold returns center-feed type fed air-to-air top-mounted intercooler. intercooler smaller previous generation , oriented different of previous generations. tilted more towards front of car. coil-on-plug ignition different in generation , not compatible st215 ecu. valve cover different first time in 3s-gte series oil filler hole on top of exhaust camshaft instead of intake. other differences include first time there no oil cooler in generation obd2 diagnostics. despite downsize in various components of generation, power retained @ 260ps (256 hp) , 324n·m (239 lb-ft).
