origins , education

born in rășinari, sibiu county, in transylvania region, parents romanian orthodox priest sava popovici-barcianu , wife stanca (née cioran). barcianu, had brother , 2 sisters, attended local church s primary school, followed lutheran gymnasium in sibiu 1858 1866. studied @ sibiu theological institute 1866 1869. during 1869-1870 school year, taught @ church school in native village. same year, barcianu sent germany, tasked studying school organization in dresden , surroundings, in order apply findings @ home.


in autumn of 1870, metropolitan andrei Șaguna, whom had known since childhood, granted him scholarship study @ german-language universities. took courses in philosophy, pedagogy , natural sciences @ universities of vienna (1870-1871), bonn (1871-1872) , leipzig (1872-1874). wrote frequent letters father studies , travels, covering topics such ongoing franco-prussian war , lectures friedrich nietzsche. received doctorate in philosophy @ leipzig in summer of 1874, thesis botany.


career

barcianu had difficulty securing employment teacher or church administrator, , refused offer romanian old kingdom s university of bucharest, stating needed in transylvania. in late 1875 found work secretary @ sibiu-based astra; job paid less student scholarship. such, worked establish girls school, headed 1876 1887. in 1876, named professor @ theological-pedagogical institute, remaining there until 1901. in theological wing, taught romanian language , literature 1877 onward, exception of year spent in prison. in pedagogical section, taught romanian language zoology, botany , mineralogy. set natural science room featuring stuffed animals, plants , minerals.


in 1901, upon recommendation of metropolitan ioan mețianu, sibiu archdiocese elected him cultural adviser, charged supervising archdiocese s schools. managed found several school libraries , embarked on inspections in order assess state of education. taken ill after 1 such visit village near sibiu, died in 1903, aged 55.

barcianu s publications included textbooks , works on pedagogy, new editions of father s writings. in 1876-1877, several colleagues, edited literary supplement telegraful român promoted phonetic spelling. in 1891, edited popular literary , scientific newspaper on own, while in 1897-1900, edited foaia pedagogică in collaboration. contributed articles telegraful român and, 1884, tribuna. again served secretary @ astra 1881 1887, , 1889 1901 headed romanian teachers association of szeben county. active in several other societies, barcianu long lay member of archdiocesan synod, notably spoke in 1900 regarding proposals new cathedral.


together friend , colleague dimitrie comșa, barcianu belonged leadership of romanian national party, , such helped draft 1892 transylvanian memorandum. result, among collectively tried in may 1894. sentenced 2 , half years in prison, held @ vác until general amnesty granted in september 1895. barcianu married silvia olteanu in 1882. died in 1902, , after husband s death following year, couple s 4 sons , 2 daughters raised sister.
