originally m1936 tunic worn same slate gray (steingrau) trousers reichswehr had introduced in 1922. these high-waisted, straight legged, button-fly trousers suspenders (braces) , 3 internal pockets plus watch-pocket; in field worn tucked jackboots.

in 1940 contractors ordered discontinue manufacture of steingrau fabric , instead produce trousers same feldgrau cloth tunic; army depots continued issue existing stocks , older dark trousers still seen until around 1942.

a new design of field trousers introduced in 1943, replacing old world war style straight legged langhosen . new features included tapered ankles (to fit new ankle boots , gaiters, replaced jackboots beginning in 1941/42), reinforced seat, , loops allow trouser belt used. german soldiers favorite , robust trousers, , produced right end of war.
