first half: october december
the penguins began 2009–10 season on friday, october 2. prior game team raised stanley cup banner @ mellon arena. ceremonial banner raising shown on video board outside mellon arena, displayed highlights previous season during days leading game. penguins won opening night game on new york rangers , defeated new york islanders following night. after first loss of season phoenix coyotes, penguins embarked on four-game road trip complete series of 5 games in 8 days. penguins swept 4 game road trip, setting new franchise record consecutive road wins start season. penguins extended overall win-streak 7 games winning first 3 games of ensuing homestand; win-streak ended loss new jersey devils on october 24.
the penguins began november three-game road trip in california. after defeating anaheim ducks, penguins lost first back-to-back games of season los angeles kings , san jose sharks. team lost boston bruins , new jersey devils. during four-game losing streak, penguins outscored 17–3. against bruins, sidney crosby did not score point fifth-consecutive game, longest point-drought of career. penguins ended skid 6–5 overtime victory against boston on november 14. bill guerin tied game .04 second left, , pascal dupuis scored in overtime.
extended injuries hindered team throughout of season. on november 16, penguins played without 4 of 6 defenceman had started team. additionally, without forwards tyler kennedy, maxime talbot , chris kunitz. evgeni malkin had missed significant time. later in week, announced defenceman jay mckee miss 2 4 weeks, sergei gonchar , maxime talbot, had surgery during off-season, both return on november 19.

the penguins began second half of season 42nd game on january 2 against tampa bay lightning. penguins went on lose both of first 2 games of second half of season second coming against florida panthers. penguins returned home two-game home stand in split first defeating atlanta thrashers , losing in high scoring 7–4 contest philadelphia flyers. after home stand, penguins embarked on five-game road trip of canada , minnesota, in finished trip decent 3–2 record wins coming against toronto maple leafs, calgary flames , edmonton oilers. battled struggling new jersey devils team atlantic division title, fell short due in large part having lost 6 divisional games against devils. penguins had 21–14–6 record in second half of season, placing them in fourth place in eastern conference (despite having third-best points total). third time in 4 years penguins had on 100 points in season (having missed out single point previous year) , fourth-straight year 45 wins or more.
