the michigan state capitol in lansing near capitol loop


mdot proposed capitol loop in 1986. highway designation part of partnership between state of michigan , city of lansing revitalize downtown area. designation of highway provided drivers signed route various attractions in downtown lansing area. mdot started implementing plans capitol loop in may 1986 improvements michigan avenue. project included initial $80,000 investment (equivalent $241,000 in 2016) streetscaping between state capitol , grand river. city of lansing transferred jurisdiction on streets involved mdot on october 13, 1989, allowing state commission trunkline.


the route serves capitol park, created act of michigan legislature in 1984 boundaries of ottawa, allegan , logan streets. fourth side vacated section of sycamore street between ottawa , allegan. current library of michigan building opened in 1989. state capitol, listed on national register of historic places on january 25, 1971, renovated part of revitalization effort. extensive, three-year renovation of capitol completed in 1992, same year in designated national historic landmark. hall of justice opened in october 2002, giving michigan supreme court permanent home first time since court had vacated capitol in 1970.
