cecchini selected red sox in fourth round of 2010 draft out of alfred m. barbe high school in lake charles, louisiana. started professional career in 2011 short-season lowell spinners affiliate team. cecchini batting .298 in first 32 games, while leading new york–penn league in doubles (12) , ranking fourth in stolen bases (12) , fifth in runs batted in (23), suffered injury , went on disabled list rest of season. before being injured, gained recognition nyp player of week on july 25 , named nyp mid-season all-star team on august 16. following 2011 season, cecchini ranked baseball america best hitter batting average in red sox minor league system.


cecchini named red sox s no. 10 prospect mlb.com entering 2012 campaign. gained promotion class greenville drive of south atlantic league. responded batting slash line (ba/obp/slg) of .305/.394/.433 in 118 games, while ending 3rd both in doubles (38) , stolen bases (53), 5th in runs scored (84), , 6th in hits (139).


cecchini started 2013 season class a-advanced salem red sox , promoted double portland sea dogs during midseason. after blistering start salem, during cecchini put line of .350/.469/.547 in 214 at-bats, slowed down sea dogs, able put respectable line of .296/.420/.404 in 240 at-bats rest of season. posted collective .322 average , .443 obp, both of second-best in organization behind alex hassan (.338/.457). later in year, honored dernell stenson sportsmanship award.


in november 2013, cecchini s contract purchased red sox , added 40-man roster.


major leagues

cecchini called boston on june 1, 2014. move expected short-term until team activated stephen drew. cecchini made major league debut same day taking on third base after dustin pedroia ejected in third inning. cecchini went 1-for-2 rbi in major league debut, optioned triple-a pawtucket red sox next day. cecchini recalled again on june 17, team designated grady sizemore assignment clear roster spot cecchini. on june 20, cecchini optioned triple-a make room returning félix doubront.
