honstein castle built in time of hohenstaufen-guelph conflict throne. foundation attributed konrad von sangerhausen, relative of legendary thuringian count, louis springer.
the counts of hohnstein, counts of ilefeld had married them, inherited lordship of south harz konrad. newly founded dynasty of honstein-ilfeld counts introduced family christian name, elger, , chose honstein castle family seat; modest ilburg in nearby ilfeld abandoned @ point in time. first mention of honstein castle in 1202. thuringian landgraves, honstein clan rapidly amassed considerable amount of territory, included regions around arnstadt , gotha in thuringian basin. first boom period family during 13th century followed loss of importance when, in 1315, estate divided between several family lines. honstein castle became militarily outdated. in 1380 captured first time , again in 1412 during family dispute, degenerated so-called flegler war, during course of hohnstein counts lost family castle.
during peasants war, honstein still seen secure fortification , therefore selected abbott of ilfeld abbey protect himself , abbey treasure. whilst counts of hohnstein saw out end of reign @ lohra castle (they died out in 1593), hohnstein castle sold possession of counts of stolberg, modernised fort militarily , structurally @ great expense (including artillery tower) , turned typical renaissance schloss. during period became 1 of largest castles in harz.
during thirty years war, however, hohnstein castle destroyed fire. having been requisitioned in 1627 imperial officer, colonel du vuer, troops electorate of saxony under lieutenant colonel vitztum von eckstedt stormed castle , drove out imperial forces. because vitztum knew not hold castle length of time placed counts of stolberg under pressure extort money them in return handing over. stollbergs not (or not) meet ultimatum, vitztum had soldiers set fire heavily plundered castle on christmas eve of 1627. according tradition, vitztum knew how foil every attempt guards on duty put fires out. few usable remnants recovered blackened ruins following withdrawal of vitztum s troops; these included clock castle chapel , altar of palace chapel.
in course of following decades , centuries castle ruins continued decay. in 1908 inn built below ruins. after 1990 safety , restoration work on castle ruins started. in easter 2001 castle once again re-occupied.
