santana played red gibson sg special p-90 pickups @ woodstock festival. during time between release of abraxas , santana iii (1970–1972), used different gibson les pauls , black gibson sg special. in 1974 played , endorsed gibson l6-s custom. can heard on album borbeletta. 1976 until 1982 main guitar yamaha sg 175b, , white gibson sg custom 3 open coil pick-ups. in 1982 started use custom made prs custom 24 guitar. in 1988 prs guitars began making santana signature model guitars, santana has played through various iterations ever since (see below).


santana uses santana ii model guitar fitted prs santana iii nickel covered pickups, tremolo bar, , .009-.042 gauge d addario strings. plays prs santana multidimensional (md) santana guitars feature necks made of single piece of mahogany topped rosewood fretboards (some feature highly sought-after brazilian rosewood). helps create smooth, singing, glass-like tone known.

santana uses classical guitar, used alvarez yairi cy127ce alvarez tension nylon strings, in last years 2009 uses custom made, semi-hollow toru nittono s model-t jazz electric nylon.


santana not use many effects pedals. prs guitar connected mu-tron wah wah pedal (or, more recently, dunlop 535q wah , t-rex replica delay pedal. through customized jim dunlop amp switcher in turn connected different amps or cabinets.


previous setups include ibanez tube screamer right after guitar. known have used electro harmonix big muff distortion famous sustain. in song stand album marathon (1979), santana uses heil talk box in guitar solo. has used audiotech guitar products 1x6 rack mount audio switcher in rehearsals 2008 live light tour.


santana uses 2 different guitar picks: large triangular dunlop has used many years, , v-pick freakishly large round.


amplifiers

carlos santana s distinctive guitar tone produced prs santana signature guitars plugged multiple amplifiers. amps consist of mesa boogie mark i, dumble overdrive reverb , more bludotone amplifier. santana compares tonal qualities of each amplifier of singer producing head/nasal tones, chest tones, , belly tones. three-way amp switcher employed on carlos s pedal board enable him switch between amps. unique tones of each amplifier blended together, complementing each other producing richer tone.


he put boogie in mesa boogie. santana credited coining popular mesa amplifier name when tried 1 , exclaimed, little thing boogies!


specifically, santana combines mesa/boogie mark head running through boogie cabinet altec 417-8h (or jbl e120s) speakers, , dumble overdrive reverb and/or dumble overdrive special running through brown or marshall 4x12 cabinet celestion g12m greenback speakers, depending on desired sound. shure ksm-32 microphones used pick sound, going pa. additionally, fender cyber-twin amp used @ home.


during career santana used gmt transistor amplifier stack , silverface fender twin. gmt 226a rig used @ woodstock concert during recording santana s debut album. during era santana had begun use fender twin, used on debut , proceedingly @ recording sessions of abraxas.
