the greenback party had been organized agricultural interests in indianapolis in 1874 urge federal government inflate economy through mass issuance of paper money called greenbacks. first national nominating convention held in indianapolis in spring of 1876. peter cooper nominated president 352 votes 119 3 other contenders. convention nominated anti-monopolist senator newton booth of california vice-president; after booth declined run, national committee chose samuel fenton cary replacement on ticket.
