Biography Bert Flugelman
flugelman born in vienna, austria in 1923 , migrated australia in 1938 when 15 years old. on eve of world war ii. 1943 1946 flugelman served in australian army (non combative duties) , 1948 1951 studied @ national art school in sydney.
from 1951 1955 travelled europe including visit in 1954 spain artist friend john copnall. in 1952 contracted polio left him mobility disability. however, did not stop him holding several successful exhibitions @ piccadilly gallery in london , barone gallery in new york before returning australia in 1955.

from 1972 1983, flugelman lecturer @ south australian school of art, , subsequently became head of sculpture. during period completed of famous work, in particular festival sculpture 1974, spheres 1977 , cones @ national gallery of australia in 1982.
from 1984 1990, flugelman senior lecturer , fellow @ school of creative arts, university of wollongong. in 1991 made professorial fellow @ university of wollongong. in 1995, received honorary doctorate of creative art (honoris causa) , in 1997, received australia council, visual arts/craft fund, emeritus award.
flugelman s career has not been without controversy such when created chainsaw carving of margaret thatcher , silver shish kebab placed in martin place, sydney heavily criticised sydney s lord mayor frank sartor led sculpture being moved spring street.

at time of death in february 2013, flugelman resided @ bowral on southern highlands of new south wales.
