mosque design

almost every historic or traditional mosque has sahn. use of sahn in middle eastern countries mosques carried on islamic countries mosque architecture.


traditional mosque sahns surrounded riwaq arcade on sides. contain fountain water basins, such howz, ritual purification cleansing , performing of wudu (islamic ablutions), , flowing fountains drinking water.


the inner courtyard not religiously proscribed architectural feature, , mosques, since twentieth century, not have sahn.

residential sahns, part of courtyard house, private. scale , design details differ: urban rural locales; different regions , climates, , different eras , cultures - basic function of security , privacy remain same. sahn can private garden, service yard, , summer season outdoor living room family or entertaining.


usually main entrance of house not lead directly sahn. reached through broken or curved corridor called majaz (arabic: مجاز‎, mağāz). lets residents admit guests majlis (arabic: مجلس‎, mağlis), salon or reception room, without seeing sahn. protected , proscribed place women of house need not covered in hijab clothing traditionally necessary in public.

traditional islamic neighborhoods can have dedicated central open space, communally private sahn, called saha (arabic: ساحة‎, sāḥä), neighbourhoods residents, consisting of members of same tribe.



public

the idea of public open space, central in middle of city, town square or central plaza, part of historical , contemporary urban design in many cultures around world. ancient examples greek agora , roman forum. can provide place various civic uses, such as: public gatherings, celebrations, , protests; city parks; open air markets , festivals; , transportation links.
