in image right, structural member central hole placed under load bearing stress. figure (a) shows u* distribution , resultant load paths while figure (b) von mises stress distribution. can seen figure (b), higher stresses can observed @ vicinity of hole. however, unreasonable conclude main load passes area stress concentration because hole (which has no material) not important carrying load. stress concentration caused structural singularities hole or notch makes load transfer analysis more difficult.
