sauris situated within carnia mountain area of friuli, in lumiei valley (val lumiei) of carnic alps, northwest of monte bìvera massif. located 60 kilometres (37 mi) northwest of provincial capital udine , 120 kilometres (75 mi) northwest of trieste.


the municipal area consists of 2 villages, sauris di sotto (unterzahre) und sauris di sopra (oberzahre), total population of 429 (as of 2010). sauris borders following municipalities: ampezzo, forni di sopra, forni di sotto, ovaro, prato carnico, , vigo di cadore.
