poole s guildhall has played varied part in history of town. grade ii* listed building, guildhall built in 1761 @ cost of £2,250. new building included open market house on ground floor , courtroom , offices town council on first floor , has been used court of record, magistrates court, court of admiralty , venue quarter sessions. between 1819 , 1821 building consecrated parish church while old st. james church pulled down , replaced present church. during second world war building used canteen , meeting room american soldiers prior invasion of france. showers , washing facilities installed @ time later converted public baths used until 1960s. building converted use town museum between 1971 , 1991 stood empty next 16 years. after renovation project funded poole borough council, restored guildhall opened in june 2007 register office weddings, civil partnerships , other civic ceremonies.
