chopped , screwed

starting in 1990s in southern united states , burgeoning in 2000s, meta-genre of hip hop called chopped , screwed became significant , popular form of turntablism. utilizing greater variety of vinyl emulation software rather normal turntables, chopped , screwed stood out previous standards of turntablism in slowing of pitch , tempo ( screwing ) , syncopated beat skipping ( chopping ), among other added effects of sound manipulation.


dj screw of texas, innovated art of chopping , screwing coining phrase chopped n screwed, taking original contemporary hit records , replaying them in chopped n screwed art form. gained large following paving way small, independent rap labels turn decent profit. however, thought many dj michael price started slowing down vinyl recordings before era of dj screw.

an orbit type of scratch used turntablists. scratch incorporates both forward , backward movement, or vice versa, of record in sequence. orbit developed dj disk incorporated flare after being shown dj q-bert. when referring orbit, talking flare orbits. example, 1 click forward flare , 1 click backward flare in quick succession (altogether creating 4 quick distinct sounds) 1 click orbit. 2 click forward flare , 2 click backward flare in quick succession (altogether creating 6 distinct sounds) 2 click orbit, etc. orbits can performed once single orbit move, or sequenced produce cyclical never ending type of orbit sound.

flare type of scratch used turntablists. made combination of moving record on turntable hand , quick movement of crossfader. flare invented namesake, dj flare in 1987. scratch technique transform in ways, instead of starting sound cutting off, 1 starts sound on , concentrate on cutting sound pieces bouncing fader off cut out side of fader slot make sound cut out , in split second.


each time dj bounces fader off side of fader slot makes distinct clicking noise. reason, flares named according clicks. simple 1 click forward flare forward scratch starting sound on dj bounces/clicks fader against side once extremely in middle of forward stroke creating 2 distinct sounds in 1 stroke of record hand , ending fader open. in same manner, 2 clicks, 3 clicks, , more clicks (if dj fast enough) can performed different types of flares. discovery , development of flare scratch instrumental in elevating art form level of speed , technical scratching seen in 2010s.

a crab type of scratch used turntablists. invented dj qbert. 1 of difficult scratch techniques master. crab done pushing record forward , while pushing crossfader mixer open or closed through quick succession of 4 movements fingers. variations can include 3 or 2 fingers, , recommended beginners start 2 fingers , work way 4. difficult move master versatile , quite rewarding if done right.
