the mantapa (hall) in temple contains sculptures of uma mahesvara (shiva consort uma), vishnu , consort lakshmi, sun god surya, nāga-nagini (the male , female snake goddess), ganapati , kartikeya, sons of shiva. shiva depicted 4 arms, holding attributes: damaru (drum), aksamala (chain of beads) , trishul (trident) in 3 arms. lower left arm rests on uma, seated on shiva s lap, embracing him right arm while gazing face. sculpture of uma decorated garlands, large earrings , curly hair. naga , nagini, tails intertwined, appear on side of door vestibule (antechamber) along image of parvati. niche depicts curious male figure 6 hands, 2 lower hands each hold linga (the symbol of shiva) , middle left hand holds chakra (wheel).
the architrave above vestibule entrance bears images of brahma, shiva , vishnu, shiva in centre. ganapati , kartikeya flank brahma , vishnu. on either side of doorway perforated stone worked window, , main shrine (garbhagriha or cella) has plain linga (the symbol of shiva). ceiling panels contain images of saptamatrika ( 7 mothers ) while square column contains images of ashtadikpalas ( 8 guardians ) along hindu trimurthy ( 3 forms ) , surya. saptamatrikas carved wall of step outside. saptamatrika sculptures on friezes has female deities, each child on lap denote motherhood , identified vahana (vehicle) of male counterpart, found under them. @ 1 end of frieze shiva , @ other ganapati. next shiva matrika ( mother ) goddessses: brahmi (or brahmani), brahma s consort, goose; maheshvari, consort of shiva has nandi (bull); vaishnavi, consort of vishnu has garuda (eagle); kaumari, consort of kartikeya has peacock; varahi, consort of varaha, has buffalo (instead of boar); indrani, consort of indra, has elephant; , last mother skeletal image of chamunda dog or dead body. other loose sculptures in niches worthy of mention of surya canopied 7 hooded snake, , mahishasuramardini (a form of durga). within temple premises several old-kannada inscriptions recording grants, earliest of inscribed on beam inside temple , dated 1087 ce while stone inscription (shilashasana) dated 1108 ce stands outside.
