the pictured statue stands prominently in front of aliʻiolani hale in honolulu, hawaii. statue had origins in 1878 when walter m. gibson, member of hawaiian government @ time, wanted commemorate 100-year arrival of captain cook hawaiian islands. legislature appropriated $10,000 project , made gibson director of project, included native hawaiians off project , gibson ran project himself. gibson contacted thomas r. gould, boston sculptor living abroad in florence, italy create statue.

even though photographs of polynesians had been sent him gould make appropriate likeness, seemed ignore them. roman nose , more european features adopted. due fact gould in italy studying roman sculpture. stance of roman general gesturing hand, spear, , cape roman appropriations. belt or sash on statue s waist symbolic rendering of sacred sash of liloa. in 1880, initial sculpture sent paris, france, cast in bronze.
