pacciardi in 1958.


after moving france, in 1936 founded italian antifascist legion fight in spanish civil war. subsequently fought @ head of garibaldi battalion, part of international brigades in siege of madrid, after promoted lieutenant colonel. pacciardi fought against national faction in spain until 1937. in year, in paris, founded weekly la giovine italia (a homage ideologist of unification of italy, giuseppe mazzini). in 1938 held series of lectures in united states anti-fascism in europe. in same year joined masonry, , confirmed secretary of pri in exile. when italian-american antifascist mazzini society founded in 1939, pacciardi joined too. returned italy after liberation of rome in 1944. in 1945 again confirmed national secretary of re-established pri, , following year elected constituent assembly of italy.


pacciardi s line of collaboration other left parties led entrance of pri in first republic government cabinets of italy (1947). pacciard resigned pri s secretary , became vice-prime minister. minister of defense 1948 1953, , supported entrance of italy in nato. in 1950s pri followed ugo la malfa line not adherence centre governments led democrazia cristiana; when in 1963 first centre-left government, led dc leader aldo moro, created, pacciardi , followers within pri voted against support it. in wake of scandal had involved previous tenure minister of defense (despite later acquitted accuse), pacciardi expelled pri.


in 1964 founded new party, unione democratica per la nuova repubblica, newspaper, la folla. line of nuova repubblica similar charles de gaulle s. however, 1968 italian election proved failure new party, 100,000 votes. pacciardi himself not re-elected italian parliament, , later accused of having coup- , neofascist-oriented friendships. in 1974 investigated participation in so-called golpe bianco of edgardo sogno.

in 1979 asked admitted republican party, happened 2 years later. in 1981 founded new magazine, l italia del popolo, directed ten years. died in rome in 1991 , buried in communal cemetery of grosseto.
