richard henry stoddard born on july 2, 1825, in hingham, massachusetts. father, sea-captain, wrecked , lost on 1 of voyages while richard child, , lad went in 1835 new york city mother, had married again. attended public schools of city. became blacksmith , later iron moulder, reading poetry @ same time. talents brought him contact young men interested in literature, notably bayard taylor, had published views afoot. in 1849 gave industrial trades , began write living. contributed union magazine, knickerbocker magazine, putnam s monthly magazine , new york evening post.
he married elizabeth drew barstow in 1852; novelist , poet. next year, nathaniel hawthorne helped him secure appointment of inspector of customs of port of new york. kept job until 1870.
from 1870 1873, confidential clerk george b. mcclellan in new york dock department, , 1874 1875 city librarian of new york. literary reviewer new york world (1860–1870); 1 of editors of vanity fair; editor of aldine (1869–1879), , literary editor of mail , mail , express (1880–1903). died in new york on may 12, 1903.
