in 1850, sherman promoted substantive rank of captain , married foster sister, ellen boyle ewing, 4 years younger, in washington ceremony attended president zachary taylor , other political luminaries. thomas ewing serving secretary of interior @ time.


like mother, ellen ewing sherman devout roman catholic, , shermans 8 children reared in faith. in 1864, ellen took temporary residence in south bend, indiana, have young family educated @ university of notre dame , st. mary s college. in 1874, sherman having become world-famous, eldest child, marie ewing ( minnie ) sherman, had politically prominent wedding, attended president ulysses s. grant , commemorated generous gift khedive of egypt. (eventually, 1 of minnie s daughters married grandson of confederate general lewis addison armistead.) of sherman daughters, eleanor, married alexander montgomery thackara @ general sherman s home in washington, d.c., on may 5, 1880. sherman s great displeasure , sorrow, oldest surviving son, thomas ewing sherman, joined religious order of jesuits in 1878 , ordained priest in 1889.

in 1853, sherman resigned captaincy , became manager of san francisco branch of st. louis-based bank, lucas, turner & co. returned san francisco @ time of great turmoil in west. survived 2 shipwrecks , floated through golden gate on overturned hull of foundering lumber schooner. sherman suffered stress-related asthma because of city s aggressive business culture. late in life, regarding time in san francisco experiencing frenzy of real estate speculation, sherman recalled: can handle hundred thousand men in battle, , take city of sun, afraid manage lot in swamp of san francisco. in 1856, during vigilante period, served briefly major general of california militia. sherman s san francisco branch closed in may 1857, , relocated new york on behalf of same bank. when bank failed during financial panic of 1857, closed new york branch. in 1858, returned california wrap-up bank s affairs there. later in 1858, moved leavenworth, kansas, tried hand @ law practice , other ventures without success.
