in hours of february 3, 1959, beechcraft bonanza aircraft carrying buddy holly, ritchie valens, , big bopper, had been performing @ surf ballroom in clear lake, took off local runway in nearby mason city, on way next show in moorhead, minnesota.


the plane crashed after takeoff, killing aboard. event later eulogized folk singer don mclean in famous song, american pie , in death of these 50s icons serves metaphor greater changes within american society whole.


in june 1988, around 600 people gathered witness dedication of monument deceased rock , roll legends. clear lake replaced street signs officially changing 2nd place north buddy holly place in honor of late singer.
