the original sr 79 designated in 1924 part of original state highways prescott jerome. 1926, extended northeast flagstaff. in 1941, redesignated u.s. route 89a. redesignated newly proposed route sedona sr 69. in 1955, rerouted 89a south of flagstaff, old route sedona being sr 79t. in 1960, sr 79 s new routing complete, , old route renumbered sr 179. sr 79 extended north 66 in 1964. in august 1992, route cancelled, , current sr 79 assigned, old sr 79 became part of interstate 17, causing cancellation of 89 south of flagstaff, 1 section renumbered current sr 79.


on afternoon of october 12, 1940, silent film actor tom mix died in car accident on sr 79 (then part of u.s. route 80) 18.5 miles southeast of florence, arizona.
