career

barry received first captain s commission in continental navy on march 14, 1776, signed john hancock, president of continental congress. barry religious man , began each day @ sea reading bible. had great regard crew , being , made sure provisioned while @ sea.


during naval career barry commanded united states ships delaware, lexington, raleigh, , alliance.


command of delaware

in 1777 barry commanded ship uss delaware, brig sailing under letter of marque capturing english vessels in delaware river.


command of raleigh

in 1778 barry assumed command of uss raleigh, capturing 3 prizes before being run aground in action on september 27, 1778. crew scuttled her, raised british, refloated further use in royal navy.


command of lexington

captain barry given command of uss lexington, of 14 guns, on december 7, 1775. first commission issued continental congress. lexington sailed march 31, 1776. on april 7, 1776, off capes of virginia, fell in edward, tender british man-of-war hms liverpool, , after desperate fight of 1 hour , twenty minutes captured , brought philadelphia.


on june 28, pennsylvania s brig nancy arrived in area 386 barrels of powder in hold , ran aground while attempting elude british blockader kingfisher. barry ordered precious powder rowed ashore during night leaving 100 barrels in nancy @ dawn. delayed action fuse left inside brig, exploded powder boatload of british seamen boarded nancy. engagement became known battle of turtle gut inlet.


barry continued in command of lexington until october 18, 1776, , captured several private armed vessels during time.


barry authored signal book published in 1780 improve communications @ sea among vessels traveling in formation.


command of alliance

he , crew of uss alliance fought , won final naval battle of american revolution off coast of cape canaveral on march 10, 1783. wounded on may 29, 1781, while in command of alliance during capture of hms atalanta , trepassey. barry successful in suppressing 3 mutinies during career officer in continental navy.


john barry once offered 100,000 british pounds , command of frigate in entire british navy if desert american navy. outraged @ offer, captain barry responded not money in british treasury or command of entire fleet tempt him desert adopted country.


commodore commission

on february 22, 1797, issued commission number 1 president george washington, backdated june 4, 1794. title thereafter commodore. recognized not first american commissioned naval officer first flag officer.


command of united states

appointed senior captain upon establishment of u.s. navy, commanded frigate united states in quasi-war france. ship transported commissioners william richardson davie , oliver ellsworth france negotiate new franco-american alliance.


barry s last day of active duty march 6, 1801, when brought uss united states port, remained head of navy until death on september 12, 1803, asthma. barry died childless.
