dunkirk evacuation

on 26 may 1940, captain tennant dispatched on board destroyer hms wolfhound dunkirk aid in evacuation of more 300,000 british , french troops left stranded when france fell nazis. tennant s task organize men , them onto ships waiting take them. tennant stayed right until last ships left on 2 june, patrolling beaches of dunkirk megaphone searching british troops.

tennant , repulse joined admiral sir tom phillips force z, sent singapore counter japanese advancement in pacific, in december 1941. on 8 december, day after pearl harbor, singapore came under attack japanese air units, , force z departed malaya attack japanese convoy, operation cancelled shortly thereafter. upon returning singapore, received word of japanese landings on malaya, , force z - without air cover - made malaya counter them.


on 10 december, japanese attacked force z. tennant ably managed avoid nineteen torpedoes dropped japanese aircraft, repulse succumbed pincer attack, taking 5 torpedoes; sank within twenty minutes, taking great deal of crew her. survivors, including captain tennant, rescued hmas vampire, 1 of destroyers in force z.

in june 1944, tennant - admiral - placed in charge of naval side of transport, assembly , setup of 2 mulberry harbours provided port facilities coming invasion of normandy. in august, supervised laying of pluto pipelines between france , england, provided needed fuel supplies ongoing conflict. efforts in success of normandy invasion, tennant appointed commander of order of british empire king george vi, , received united states legion of merit.
