the site had been occupied red brick georgian market place built in 1790. nearby slaughterhouse had ended practice of slaughtering animals in street. trade had been concentrated here since 1810 when act of parliament had been obtained forbade street trading in other parts of town. act of parliament in 1853 allowed halifax council buy new market, known, private owners price of £7,700.
the markets , fairs committee decided in 1890 replace overflowing market place new structure. local architects joseph , john leeming engaged draw plans. £50,000 loan obtained corporation following year, final cost rising £130,000, £20,000 on budget. work began in october 1892 , progressed slowly, until market officially opened on 25 july 1896 duke , duchess of york, later became king george v , queen mary. opened royal halifax infirmary on same day. opening hours @ outset 8 8 pm on mondays wednesdays, half day closing on thursdays, 8 4 pm. fridays 8 9 pm , saturdays 6 10.30 pm.
the building s stonework cleaned in 1973, same year southgate made pedestrian area, road raised pavement level.
in 1987 civic trust gave market award renovated victorian shop fronts, commenting market has elegance seldom seen on such grand scale .
in 1993 central clock, used rendezvous point, refurbished using more fifty square feet of gold leaf.
in 1995 halifax centre strategy report recommended moving fishmongers on albion street inside market , replacing them shop units improve attractiveness , rental income.
