roman period

ceramic tiles , amphoras abancourt s roman period displayed in beauvais museum. these found near hamlet on mountain , assumed there must have been roman camp or installation @ 1 time. fine red pottery, stepped , curved roof tiles 50 centimetres across have been found.


on abancourt s ancient roman road lies linden tree 6 metres in circumference, possibly marker of military border or celtic monument.

abancourt appears abancourt on 1750 cassini map , same on 1790 version.


the village renamed abancourt-la-montagne after french revolution. between 1791 , 1823, commune reattached romescamps. in 1823 abancourt newly created commune blargies hennicourt added it.


in 1867 railway came abancourt construction of abancourt station on rouen amiens line. connected directly le tréport , paris in 1873-1875.


in first world war main british supply ports of le havre , inland port of rouen had restricted hinterlands. necessary find location daily supplies, maintain 1.3 million troops, marshalled , distributed. abancourt, junction of several key railway lines coast , somme, chosen. supply trains le havre , rouen disgorged content vast warehouses in abancourt complex along 3.2 kilometres (2.0 mi) of track. warehouses contained enough non-perishable stores last @ least 1 month , dispatched twenty-two supply trains day next distribution station. today there no obvious trace of vast complex of warehouses , sidings.


in first world war, british army had prison @ abancourt. in august 1916 serious mutiny broke out in prison, 7 ring-leaders prosecuted , @ least 2 put death on 29 october 1916: british gunner lewis, aged 30, shot @ rouen, , new zealand private john (jack) braithwaite, 35 years old, shot @ prison.
