in 1950s, received commission oriental nakamura department store in nagoya create large mural on main facade of flagship store. mural demolished after oriental nakamura bought mitsukoshi in 1970s. in 1964 tarō okamoto published book titled shinpi nihon (mysteries in japan). interest in japanese mysteries sparked off visit made tokyo national museum. after having become intrigued jōmon wares found there, journeyed on japan in order research perceived mystery lies beneath japanese culture, , published nihon sai-hakken-geijutsu fudoki (rediscovery of japan-topography of art).

after being lost 30 years in mexico, on november 17, 2008, mural myth of tomorrow (明日の神話, asu no shinwa), depicting effects of atomic bomb, unveiled in new permanent location @ shibuya station, tokyo. in it, human figure burns , others appear run flames. work made hotel de mexico in mexico city manuel suarez y suarez.


kawasaki, hometown, has constructed taro okamoto museum of art in tama ward, northwest of city. studio/home open visitors , located in aoyama in tokyo.
