3s-ge
the toyota 3s-ge (originally titled 3s-gelu in transversely-mounted applications japanese emission controls), in-line 4 cylinder engine in s engine family, manufactured toyota , designed in conjunction yamaha. while block iron, cylinder head made of aluminium alloy. pent-roof combustion chambers complemented cross-flow intake , exhaust layout. spark plug located in center of combustion chamber. firing order 1-3-4-2, cylinder number 1 adjacent timing belt. 3s-ge designed light, first iteration 3s-gelu weighing in @ low 143 kg (315 lb).
the forged crankshaft, located within crankcase, rotates on 5 aluminium alloy bearings , balanced 8 weights. oil holes located in middle of crankshaft provide oil connecting rods, bearing, pistons , other moving components. intake manifold has 4 independent ports , benefits inertia build improve engine torque @ low , medium speeds.
a single timing belt drives intake , exhaust camshaft. cam journals supported on 5 points between valve lifters of each cylinder , on front of cylinder head, , lubricated oiler port located in middle of camshaft.
the pistons made aluminium alloy, designed withstand high temperatures. indentation incorporated piston head prevent pistons hitting valves, should timing belt break (this not true of later beams - acronym stands breakthrough engine advanced mechanism system - motors). commonly referred non-interference engine. piston pins holding pistons in place locked snap rings. outer shim type system allows replacement of shims without need remove camshaft. adjust valve clearance, adjust shims above valve lifters.
the first compression ring , oil ring made of steel, second compression ring made of cast iron. compression rings 1 , 2 prevent exhaust leakage combustion chamber while oil ring works clear oil off cylinder walls, preventing excessive oil entering combustion chamber. oil pan baffle used ensure there sufficient oil available in oil pan.
there 5 generations of 3s-ge, used in toyota celica, mr2, caldina, rav4, , altezza. 3s-ge engines had displacement of 2.0 l (1,998 cc). additionally, turbocharged 3s-gte engines based on 3s-ge platform.
generation 1
the first-generation 3s-ge produced may 1984 1989, arriving in both northern american versions, in japan second variation. northern american engine less powerful, producing around 135 bhp (101 kw). engine 3s-ge come north america, in celica gt-s (st162). among other things, japanese market version sported more aggressive ecu , lacked egr valve system, pushing output somewhere around 160 ps (118 kw) @ 6,400 rpm , 19.0 kg·m (186 n·m) of torque. engine available in particular in toyota camry/vista twin cam 2000 (3s-gelu v10s, 3s-ge v20s) , toyota corona *t150 (limited chassis version - st162 3s-gelu).
generation 2
the second generation produced 1990 1993, receiving slight boost in output 165 ps (121 kw), 156 ps (115 kw) in european markets. peak torque went 19.5 kg·m (191 n·m). proved more reliable engine. second generation did away t-vis system, replaced acis (acoustic control induction system), proving more efficient. t-vis was, however, retained on second-generation 3s-gte, turbocharged counterpart.
generation 3
the third-generation 3s-ge produced 1994 1999. power output japanese market increased 180 ps (132 kw; 178 hp) compression ratio increased 10.3:1, while motors other markets received minor revision in 1996 emissions (egr) reduced power output 170 ps (125 kw; 168 hp) @ 7,000 rpm. torque remains same both @ 19.5 kg·m (191 n·m).
generation 4
the fourth-generation 3s-ge, known red top beams 3s-ge began production in 1997. beams acronym stands breakthrough engine advanced mechanism system.
the first version equipped vvt-i , produced 200 ps (147 kw; 197 hp) @ 7,000 rpm when coupled manual transmission. automatic version produced 190 ps (140 kw; 187 bhp) @ 7000 rpm; believed ecu restriction implemented toyota due gearbox limitations. available in few models sold in japan: mr2 g , g-limited, celica st202 ss-ii , ss-iii , caldina.
the second version generation 4 3s-ge, grey top beams 3s-ge, available engine option in rav4 , second-generation caldina active sports gt in japan. though valve cover on engine black, referred grey top , taking name grey intake plenum colouring. naming such differentiate fifth-generation dual-vvti black top in altezza. power output 180 ps (132 kw; 178 hp) @ 6,600 rpm in rav4 , 190 ps (140 kw; 187 hp) in caldina gt. mechanical differences between red top , grey top headers , ecu. wiring identical.
casting provisions exist in heads exhaust vvt solenoid, , rwd water gallery open, behind alternator mount. rear oil drain @ of head in different position.
gen 4 runs manual throttle body.
this engine used in tte wrc corollas (modified turbo).
generation 5
beams 3s-ge 5th-generation engine ( black top )
in 1998, fifth , final version of 3s-ge released, found in japanese-delivered altezza rs200. black top came referred as, fitted dual vvt-i system adjusted timing on both intake , exhaust camshafts , came in 2 different spec levels dependent on transmission coupled to.
gen 5 uses electronic controlled throttle cable (semi-drive wire), no idle speed controller required. returnless fuel rail used.
the mt version came equipped j160 6-speed manual transmission featured larger diameter titanium intake valves measuring 35mm, larger exhaust valves measuring 29.5mm made titanium, larger 33mm bucket , compression ratio of 11.5:1. made 210 ps (154 kw; 207 hp) @ 7,600 rpm , 22.0 kg·m (216 n·m) @ 6,400 rpm.
compared mt version, 5-speed @ version came equipped a650e tiptronic automatic transmission , had lower compression ratio of 11.1:1, less aggressive cam profile, smaller steel-alloy valves , smaller 31mm buckets. engine made 200 ps (147 kw; 197 hp) @ 7,000 rpm , 22.0 kg·m (216 n·m) @ considerably lower 4,800 rpm. externally, @ model can identified differences in wiring loom , lack of acoustic blanket on intake plenum.
