history

the station assigned wkue-fm call sign on december 4, 1978 on 97.7 fm. on september 3, 1990, call sign changed wqul kool 97.7 fm .


as whta hot 97.5

when griffin, then-owner of station, upgraded class c3 station on july 17, 1995, tower moved closer atlanta , moved down 97.5 fm frequency. format changed mainstream urban new callsign, whta. @ launch, then- hot 97.5 first urban station in atlanta feature hip hop , rap music in regular rotation, given fact hip hop , rap music on radio still niche genre @ time atlanta in spite of major african american presence in audience , music culture. whta became second permanent urban competitor behind walr challenge heritage station wvee, although station r&b/soul-oriented until incorporated hip hop full-time in 2000. (former competitor wbts did not compete directly whta until 2001 when gravitated top 40 format pop rhythmic, 2 years after launched.) thus, pure hip hop , r&b station based in atlanta first 5 years on air.


while station initial moderate success among young adult audience in region (especially inner-city atlanta), whta suffered setback signal coverage. due transmitter location being based in tyrone , smaller signal wattage, barely audible in northern portions of atlanta beyond downtown area (barely penetrating office buildings @ all) or northern reaches of fulton or dekalb counties, rimshot southwest of city. when radio 1 took on operations later on, there plans give whta simulcast on 107.5 wtha until new owners changed minds instead , launched adult urban format there wamj. (this original incarnation of majic 107.5 .) led morning show host ryan cameron (now hosting mornings @ wvee) lobby frequency change whta putting petition listeners @ risk of losing job under radio 1 s management. proved successful, , on november 1, 2001, owner radio 1 moved radio format , whta call letters stronger 107.9 hot 107.9 still airs today.

after whta relocated 107.9, 97.5 fm relaunched urban gospel station praise 97.5 call sign wegf until december 5, 2001 when call sign again changed wpze. 1 of earliest radio 1 gospel stations marked praise nickname spread other stations on course of decade. in march 2007, wpze began carry yolanda adams morning show based out of houston via sister kroi-fm, although station has since been moved subchannel of kmjq in same city. in 2008, wpze went on become flagship locally based coco brother live show, airs in nighttime. coco brother worked @ whta before landing show, , in addition, hosts lift every voice on bet. on february 16, 2009, praise branding moved 102.5.

after wpze relocated 102.5, 97.5 frequency changed simulcast of majic 107.5 new callsign wumj. result in end of smooth jazz music on 107.5 (then wjzz) wamj call sign relocated frequency reincarnate majic branding there.

on january 10, 2016, wumj broke majic simulcast , began simulcasting translator w275bk s classic hip hop format boom 102.9/97.5 . change coordinated debut of syndicated ed lover show in mornings starting on 11th on radio one’s classic hip-hop stations. addition of wumj increases boom’s coverage south of atlanta, including peachtree city , newnan areas. general manager tim davies stated in press release of majic’s audience moved on 107.5 following upgrade of signal 3 years ago, making 97.5 expendable.

on july 29, 2016 wumj returned simulcast of urban adult contemporary-formatted majic 107.5.
