many of best-known allegations of abuse made animal protection or animal rights groups against animal-testing facilities involve nhps.


university of wisconsin–madison

on april 21, 1985, activists of animal liberation front (alf) broke uc riverside laboratories , removed hundreds of animals. according vicky miller of peta, reported raid newswire services, uc-riverside has been using animals in experiments on sight deprivation , isolation last 2 years , has received grant, paid our tax dollars, continue torturing , killing animals. according ucr officials, alf claims of animal mistreatment absolutely false, , raid result in long-term damage of research projects, including aimed @ developing devices , treatment blindness. ucr officials reported raid included smashing equipment , resulted in several hundred thousand dollars of damage.

a veterinary toxicologist employed study director @ covance in vienna, virginia, 2002 2004, told city officials in chandler, arizona, covance dissecting monkeys while animals still alive , able feel pain. employee approached city concerns when learned covance planned build new laboratory in chandler.

in uk, after undercover investigation in 1998, british union abolition of vivisection (buav), lobby group, reported researchers in cambridge university s primate-testing labs sawing tops off marmosets heads, inducing strokes, leaving them overnight without veterinarian care, because staff worked 9 five. experiments used marmosets first trained perform behavioral , cognitive tasks, re-tested after brain damage determine how damage had affected skills. monkeys deprived of food , water encourage them perform tasks, water being withheld 22 out of every 24 hours.

in 2003, cnn reported post-doctoral veterinarian @ columbia university complained university s institutional animal care , use committee experiments being conducted on baboons e. sander connolly, assistant professor of neurosurgery. experiment involved left transorbital craniectomy expose left internal carotid artery occlude blood supply brain. clamp placed on blood vessel until stroke induced, after connolly test potential neuroprotective drug if effective, used treat humans suffering stroke.


connolly developed methodology make more consistent stroke infarcts in primates, improve detection of differences in stroke treatment groups, , provide important information not obtainable in rodent models. baboons kept alive after surgery observation 3 ten days in state of profound disability have been terrifying, according neurologist robert hoffman. connolly s published animal model states animals kept alive 3 days, , animals self-caring kept alive 10 days. people ethical treatment of animals has expressed strong opposition experiment , has written multiple letters nih , other federal agencies halt further mistreatment of baboons , other animals @ columbia.

in 2006, activists forced primate researcher @ ucla shut down experiments in lab. name, phone number, , address posted on website of ucla primate freedom project, along description of research, stated had received grant kill 30 macaque monkeys vision experiments. each monkey first paralyzed, used single session lasts 120 hours, , killed. demonstrations held outside home. molotov cocktail placed on porch of believed home of ucla primate researcher. instead, accidentally left on porch of elderly woman unrelated university. animal liberation front claimed responsibility attack.


as result of campaign, researcher sent email primate freedom project stating win , , please don t bother family anymore. in incident @ ucla in june 2007, animal liberation brigade placed bomb under car of ucla children s ophthalmologist, performs experiments on cats , rhesus monkeys; bomb had faulty fuse , did not detonate. ucla refusing freedom of information act requests animal medical records.


the house of ucla researcher edythe london intentionally flooded on october 20, 2007, in attack claimed animal liberation front. london conducts research on addiction using non-human primates, although no claims made alf of violation of rules or regulations regarding use of animals in research. london responded writing op-ed column in la times titled why use laboratory animals.


in 2009, ucla neurobiologist known using animals research drug addiction , other psychiatric disorders had car burned second time.
