early history

the divine word college of legazpi liceo de albay, diocesan parochial school boys owned , managed rev. fr. juan carullo, retired army chaplain , native of malinao, albay. when left military service, retirement pay , other personal wealth invested in school founded. @ beginning, school exclusive high school boys (st. agnes exclusive high school girls).


in 1952, strong typhoon hitting albay badly damaged liceo de albay. around time, society of divine word (svd) looking place put school in province. fr. joseph bates, svd, negotiated bishop of albay svd acquisition of liceo de albay, amidst school s financial difficulties.


in 1959, formal transfer of ownership , management effected around php 30,000.00. reconstruction of school began fr. bates personal funds money family , friends , united states of america. svds , bates in legazpi city, many people old assignment in bohol brought him build , run liceo de albay.


when bicol association of catholic schools (bacs) formed, bates chosen chairman. bates met fr. honesto moraleda, parish priest of st. michael parish in oas, albay through activities of bacs. invited moraleda become first high school principal of school permission of bishop flaviano b. ariola. bates director.


the 1960s

in 1965, divine word high school became divine word college of legazpi. formation made possible combined efforts of bishop nestor c. cariño, msgr. jose molina, msgr. jose diokno, msgr. ralph salazar , msgr. honesto moraleda. recognition high school given bureau of private schools. school first director fr. joseph l. bates, svd, while first principal fr. honesto a. moraleda.


the faculty members included protacio borlagdan, ruperta ungay (later altabano), lydia platon , jun peñalosa, antonio laurora, arnulfo cabredo, arles navara, miss ongcoy, trinidad navea, josaphat clidoro.


in 1965, first college courses opened following enrollment:

total: 239 students


in 1969, produced first batch of graduates in commerce, education, high school , elementary.


the 1970s

in 1971, tie-up st. gregory great seminary forged enable graduates minor seminary of tabaco pursue college level. ab department, thus, offered a.b. philosophy. in 1974, two-year accounting aide , salesmanship offered followed civil engineering course in 1976. in 1978, graduate school opened masters in business administration course.


the 1980s 1990s

in 1981, first batch of civil engineering graduates passed board examination passing score of 91.6%. in 1983, department of education, culture , sports (decs) region v recognized dwcl center commerce/business education. school year 1983-1984, computer subjects integrated commerce curriculum. 1984, dwcl produced first topnotcher , 4th placers in junior geodetic engineering board exams. sy 1984-1985, dwcl became pilot center associate in commercial science - government accounting , auditing, three-year course. in 1985, became cpa review center. 1987, 2 education courses, beed , bse, temporarily closed re-opened. in 1988, college again produced first placer in civil engineering given prc. in 1989, award bestowed decs region v center of development of commerce , business education.


by 1993, bachelor s degree in computer science , computer secretarial courses opened. in 1994, bachelor of science in secretarial administration (bssa) likewise opened. due clamor new offerings, in second semester of school year 1995-1996, dwcl offered masters in public management (mpm) , master in business education (mbe). in 1997, commerce department added entrepreneurship 1 of majors b.s. commerce. in same year, accountancy department produced 9th placer in cpa board exam. end of 1999, dwcl had produced 9 board placers.


recent history

mercy rebua adjudged 1 of ten outstanding rizal model students of philippines of millennium. award given on december 23, 2000 @ headquarters of order of knights of rizal in manila.


various students had received multiple recognitions , awards different local, national , international organizations , events.
