biography
knowlton born in dallas, texas on july 30, 1920. in 1940, left college join free french forces, served in middle east ambulance driver , awarded croix de guerre. joined united states army in 1942 , served medic in pacific theater , awarded silver star.
following completion of military service, knowlton attended birmingham-southern college, awarded degree in history in 1946. earned master s degree in 1949 @ university of north carolina @ chapel hill, majored in political science, , later served on school s faculty. worked @ number of firms in maine after graduation , returned yale university , boston university further graduate education. teacher @ high schools, including @ brookline high school, coached school s chess team 1970 national championship.

knowlton ran american youth hostels program @ university of new hampshire, envisioned program combine features of youth hostels adult folk school programs had seen while backpacking through europe. david bianco, supervised dormitory , dining programs @ unh , had hired knowlton run hostel based on connections @ boston university, brainstormed concept. elder hostel came out name, after bianco saw self-described hippie knowlton white beard sitting under sign saying youth hostel .
the 2 devised program in people above age 55 take summer courses while staying in dormitories low price. knowlton described program s purpose erasing disturbing concept people used after age 65 , offering program aimed @ stimulating elderly out of agism trap , solving 2 different problems matching them each other; inefficient use of capital resources @ colleges on summer , difficulties of growing old in society focused on youth. program started in 1975 220 students ages 60 , on 5 campuses in new hampshire, support of eugene s. mills, president of university of new hampshire , grant of $7,500 spaulding potter charitable trust. within 5 years had grown 20,000 students. program expanded internationally, mexico, great britain , scandinavia, in 1981. time of death, elderhostel offered 8,000 programs across united states , in 90 countries.
with elderhostel s growth , incorporation non-profit in 1977, knowlton left organization citing tendency cut administrative corners freely , resist beyond reason, needed administrative developments . bianco described knowlton having administrative skills of gnat .
post-elderhostel
after leaving elderhostel, knowlton moved california. there, established gatekeepers future, organization intended motivate seniors lobby environmental change. restructured , renamed center study of future in 1990s.
personal
knowlton died @ age 88 on march 12, 2009 @ nursing home in ventura, california due natural causes. survived 2 daughters , grandchild; both of marriages had ended in divorce.
