biography

hovhnanes lazarian (ivan lazarev) born on 17 october 1820 in shusha in nagorno karabakh, part of russian empire, , studied @ school in city. in 1839 began military career in caucasus, where, actions, made officer in 1842.


north caucasus

before war in western armenia in 1877, general lazarian made name in northern caucasus. assigned, many officers, fight in murid war in dagestan against imam shamil. lazarian, unlike officers, took time study , learn tatar language. language known throughout caucasus region peasants, , hence foot soldiers. knowledge first enter negotiations muslim rebels , 1 set plans peace processes. in 1840 involved in arrest of hadji murad. crowning achievement in theater talks held defeated shamil, whom led choose peace , surrender governing forces in 1859. diplomatic act made him general after being bestowed military orders of highest rank.


russo-turkish war

eleven years after career in dagestan, called duty on armenian soil against turks. skills used save historic homeland. when lazarian first got area of military conflict, role quiet limited compared likes of count loris-melikov , general arshak ter-gukasov. nevertheless, when duty called upon general during strike upon aladzhin position, showed great promise on front when given command of avant garde divisions in army, wheel-transport between arpachay , kegacha. given forces lazarian drew turkish forces towards main location @ kars province, forces composed of 25 battalions later laid down arms lazarian. these actions added more ribbons , medals on chest of artsakh general.


an more memorable occurrence took place during night of 5 november 6 november. before divisions marched upon fortresses around kars: hafiz, kanlyi, chimon, taynasm abd arab-tabi, lazarian rode in front of divisions screaming now, god! , throwing military cap in air , making sign of cross. after successful storming of kars on fourth try, victory in area certain.


turkmenistan

in 1879 sent command expedition led battle of geok tepe (1879). campaign beginning grew ill, insisted on accompanying troops , died @ chat on august 14, 1879. replaced lomakin made incompetent attack , defeated.


on 14 august 1879 lazarian died while on expedition on eastern side of caspian sea.
