biography
andré castaigne son of jean eusèbe joseph castaigne (1828–1902), himself painter, , mathilde debouchaud. brother joseph jean destrains castaigne (1859–1923) poet. in 1878, began studies @ académie suisse. after few months transferred académie des beaux-arts 2 mentors taught. in cabanel s studio year before moving gérôme s studio won first place in general competition 3 times–for nude figure painting, composition, , general excellence. work selected prix de rome on 3 occasions and, although never won, compliment ten paintings selected competition.
early career
he had first exhibition in paris in 1884, whence painting dante et béatrice went on tour new orleans received great deal of attention. in 1887 exhibited huge painting, 5 yards four, deluge, later placed in municipal gallery of native city angoulême. in 1888, painted portrait of vicomte de dampierre in hunting jacket , in 1889 created painting titled after combat, later acquired peabody gallery in baltimore.

castaigne spent 6 months in england, went united states in 1890 , remained until 1895. became director of art school in baltimore called charcoal club , under direction school, had been in decline, flourished , became 1 of best art schools in region. painted several notable portraits first year in america. in 1891, began illustrating work best known american public. first work of type forty-niners ball in century magazine may 1891, followed bowery in december of same year. these images of west earned him immediate recognition master of american art form. after illustrated several of leading magazines. designs included pictures of texas cowboys in scribner s magazine—on great cattle trail (1892), part of series titled cattle trails of prairies , world s fair drawings , illustrations polly in century magazine. in 1893, painted 8 illustrations article a.c. fletcher on omaha tribe in century. illustrated b.i. wheeler s life of alexander great (1900), did on 36 paintings , drawings november 1898 october 1899. work century magazine included travelling extensively, visiting corsica (1894), italy (1895, 1896), greece (1897) , rhineland (1898) illustrate travel articles augustine birrell. century did on 160 illustrations. worked harper s magazine 1901 1913. official painter olympic games in 1896.

he died unmarried in 1929 @ clinique st. marthe in angoulême had been admitted hernia. due complications result of not obeying medical orders , getting out of bed, proved fatal.
