2010: elijah hooker

after graduating erwin high school in asheville, north carolina, on june 30, 2009, caleb johnson first joined band called rock bottom lead singer. year later, joined friend josh sawyer in rock band called elijah hooker , became lead vocalist. sawyer lead guitarist of band; other members of band included brian turner on keyboard, shawn foerst on bass, , colten emery on drums.


elijah hooker released self-titled debut album elijah hooker in june 2013. 10-track album featured happiest man lead track.


2011-14: american idol

johnson auditioned american idol 3 times in 4 years. first auditioned tenth season of american idol in 2011. put through hollywood week , in hollywood group james durbin. in 2012, johnson auditioned eleventh season , made top 42. had difficulties in performance of old time rock , roll , cut @ top 24 selection. took following year off auditioning improve on stage presence.


johnson auditioned again in 2014 thirteenth season , made top 20. in semifinal round, voted america top 5 male contestants, giving him spot in season s top 13. johnson got positive feedback judges every week, had strong performances, , became finalist in season never land in bottom 3 prior reaching finale. season, johnson declared winner.

2014-present: testify, independent ep , upcoming second studio album

soon after johnson won american idol started working on debut album. album recorded in 3 weeks , johnson collaborated musicians such howard benson, aloe blacc, brian howes, blair daly , james michael. testify released on august 12, 2014. quickest american idol winner has released debut album.


after parting ways record label in late 2015, johnson began working on second album independently. album released in 2016, , lead single, holding on, released on february 9, 2016. johnson self-releasing big johnson records. second single, hanging band, released on april 7, 2016.


after pledge music campaign, johnson released new ep, born southern ground.
