macarthur responsible confirming , enforcing sentences war crimes handed down international military tribunal far east. in late 1945, allied military commissions in various cities of orient tried 5,700 japanese, taiwanese , koreans war crimes. 4,300 convicted, 1,000 sentenced death, , hundreds given life imprisonment. charges arose incidents included rape of nanking, bataan death march , manila massacre. trial in manila of yamashita criticized because hanged iwabuchi s manila massacre, had not ordered , of unaware. iwabuchi had killed himself battle manila ending.


macarthur gave immunity shiro ishii , other members of bacteriological research units in exchange germ warfare data based on human experimentation. exempted emperor , members of imperial family implicated in war crimes, including princes chichibu, asaka, takeda, higashikuni , fushimi, criminal prosecutions. macarthur confirmed emperor s abdication not necessary. in doing so, ignored advice of many members of imperial family , japanese intellectuals publicly called abdication of emperor , implementation of regency.
