the church s. pietro in carnia



the diocese of zuglio (italian) or iulium carnicum (in latin) established in 380 ad (or later according o source) on territory -originally cadorna , carnia - split off diocese of aquileia , became suffragan @ elevation (metropolitan) patriarchate of aquileia in 560. strategic position on iulia augusta (connecting aquileia, monte croce carnico, aguntum in noricum) brought wealth , extended jurisdiction
the barbaric invasions made inhabitants flee city, first translating basilica , episcopal see san pietro mount abandoning zuglio in 705 after terrible raid avars. longobard historian paulus diaconus notes bishop fidentius transferred see cividale successor, amatore, chased there in 737 patriarch callixtus of aquileia, made cividale patriarchal see.
it suppressed in 740 @ bishop amatore s death, territory being merged patriarchate of aquileia, retained right cathedral chapter until napoleonic era. former cathedral, s. pietro in carnia, in zuglio, not granted co-cathedral status. carnia ended in archdiocese of udine, cadore went in 1846 diocese of belluno.
