grappling techniques can broadly subdivided clinch fighting; takedowns , throws; submission holds , pinning or controlling techniques; , sweeps, reversals, turnovers, , escapes.
clinching, or clinch work, takes place both competitors on feet using various clinch holds applied upper body of opponent. clinch work used set or defend against throws or takedowns.
takedowns takedown used 1 grappler manipulate opponent position both standing, position on ground. grappler completing takedown aims end on top of opponent in position of relative control.
throws: throw technique in 1 grappler lifts or off-balances opponent , maneuvers him forcefully through air or ground. purpose of throws varies among different disciplines of grappling emphasizing throws potential incapacitate opponent, while leaving thrower standing, or gain takedown or controlling position.
sprawling: sprawl defensive technique done when opponent attempts takedown. performed shifting legs backwards , spread out in 1 fast motion. if done correctly 1 land on opponent s , gain control.
submission holds: there 2 types of submission holds: potentially strangle or suffocate opponent (chokes), , potentially cause injury joint or other body part (locks). in sport grappling, competitor expected submit, either verbally or tapping opponent, admit defeat when caught in submission hold cannot escape. competitors refuse tap out risk unconsciousness or serious injury.
securing or controlling techniques: pin involves holding opponent on in position unable attack. in styles of competitive grappling pin instant victory, , in other styles considered dominant position rewarded points. other controlling techniques used hold opponent face down on ground or on fours in order prevent escape or attack. either of these types of technique may used prelude submission hold.
escapes: in general sense, escape accomplished maneuvering out of danger or inferior position; example when grappler underneath side control moves guard or gets neutral standing position, or when grappler able maneuver out of submission attempt , position no longer in immediate danger of being submitted.
turnovers: used maneuver opponent on fours or flat on stomach back, in order score points, prepare pin or in order gain more dominant position.
reversals or sweeps: these occur when grappler underneath opponent on ground able maneuver gains top position on opponent.
